Gaskets are made from a cut of sheet materials. Mechanical seals are used to fill a space between two joining surfaces. The purpose is to prevent any leakages that might occur to the joined surfaces while they undergo compression. They allow imperfect surfaces or objects on parts of a machine where they can fill up the irregularities.

Gaskets used for applications such as high-pressure steam systems may use asbestos, which is considered a health hazard. Asbestos is put to use when the need arises. It is recommended that gaskets be made using materials with some degree of yielding. It means the ability to be molded and tightly filled into designed spaces.

Some gaskets will require a type of sealant applied to them to enable them to function as they should. Other gaskets are made of entire metals, and they will highly depend on the surfaces they are lying on to achieve the seal.
